ED of Gambia Participates Honored at the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International ACE Awards

In Doha, under a global spotlight reserved for changemakers reshaping the fight against corruption, a Gambian civic organization saw its work resonate far beyond national borders. Gambia Participates has long championed integrity, public accountability, and civic empowerment. On 14 December, that commitment received international recognition on one of the world’s most distinguished anti-corruption platforms.

Global Recognition on a Prestigious Stage

On that remarkable evening, Marr Nyang, Founder and Executive Director of Gambia Participates, received the Youth Creativity and Engagement Prize on Anti-Corruption at the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Awards.

The award was presented under the patronage of the Emir of the State of Qatar and in partnership with the United Nations. The ACE Awards were established to honour exceptional individuals and institutions whose bold ideas and courageous actions advance transparency, integrity, and good governance worldwide.

Celebrated annually, the awards spotlight leaders who challenge entrenched corruption, inspire civic participation, and promote accountability across communities and institutions. Marr’s recognition in the youth category reinforces the growing global importance of youth-led civic innovation in driving democratic reform.

An Award That Reflects an Institution, Not Just an Individual

While the award was presented to Marr Nyang, it represents a far broader story—the journey, values, and sustained commitment of Gambia Participates as an organization.

Over the years, our team has worked tirelessly to strengthen public finance transparency, promote meaningful citizen participation, expose governance gaps, and advocate for reforms that place integrity at the centre of national development. Our work in civic education, budget analysis, fiscal transparency, and anti-corruption advocacy has empowered communities across the country and created pathways for young people to engage meaningfully in national governance processes.

This recognition therefore reflects the collective effort of our staff, partners, volunteers, and citizens who continue to stand firmly for transparency and accountability.

What This Means for The Gambia

For The Gambia, this achievement carries deep significance. It demonstrates that local leadership and homegrown solutions can stand confidently on the global stage. It affirms that Gambian youth are not only contributing to national development but are actively shaping global conversations on integrity and governance.

More importantly, it reinforces a fundamental truth: the fight against corruption is not determined by size or resources, but by courage, innovation, and the resilience of citizens committed to justice and the public good.

Looking Ahead with Renewed Determination

As we celebrate this honour, we do so with deep gratitude and renewed resolve. This recognition strengthens our commitment to continue building a society grounded in integrity—where accountability is upheld, transparency is institutionalised, and citizens remain at the heart of governance.

Gambia Participates remains dedicated to advancing a more transparent and accountable Gambia. This milestone inspires us to continue pushing boundaries, engaging communities, and championing reforms that ensure integrity is not an aspiration, but a standard.
